Open Street Map

http://www.openstreetmap.org/

It is a way to write maps easily and accurately. Useful for private as well as commercial uses especially for remote areas such as Sabah that still do not have good quality maps. We all can start contributing by updating our maps all the time. It is useful for us and our family and friends as well.

Wikimapia is a good map as well but it has limitations. Open Street Map can upload GPS data from our phones. Very useful for Sabah that do not have proper roads for many places.

You can save your tracks using the Android osmtracker. Save it as gpx. Then use File Commander to move it to your PC via Dropbox. In the Open Street Map browser website, you can upload it. It takes a long time to update the data but at your PC the data will remain, but you cannot see it at other PCs or your mobile phone.

You can edit you map using Potlatch 2 which is the easiest but it is online. An offline editor is JOSM. It is a Java program but I can just click the jar file, and it will lauch properly. I have not tested it yet. Of course, you must install Java first. You can download file and edit it there.

The reason why I was interested in OSM was because of my need for navigation. Google Maps is good for navigation. It can show you directions with maps and pictures as well. Unfortunately it works only online just like Wikimapia. Wikimapia is superior to Google Maps as far a map is concerned but it suffers from lack of navigation and offline use. I need to travel to places where mobile data connection is very expensive.

In Android the best navigation software that is free is the MapFactor. It allows you to download offline maps in small chunks but because it comes from its website, not from OSM, it will be obsolete very quickly because it will be updated late. We cannot edit our maps and let use MapFactor to use them soon after. We must wait for Mapfactor to update their map files first. Even updating my own edits into OSM is taking a long time. It is more than 24 hours already.
